University of Nebraska Medical Center – Lot 50 Parking Structure Partial Infill

Lot 50 is the Employee Parking Structure located across from the Durham Outpatient Center on the University of Nebraska Medical Center campus in Omaha, NE. The lot had two existing entrances on the 3rd and 4th levels that exit onto Emile Street, but during high traffic times the street consistently would become congested at these points. In 2015, Hawkins was hired to provide a 3rd entrance and exit to funnel vehicles to Leavenworth Street, connect the 3rd floor to the 1st floor, add 97 parking stalls, and improve the overall parking structure and stairwells. With a compressed schedule of just 3½ months, the project included a post-tensioned ramp constructed of new cast-in-place concrete, and a partial level in the existing parking garage. Upgrades included structural maintenance, surface coatings, painting, lighting, wayfinding, and lobby finishes.

The new deck and ramp encompass approximately 50,000 square feet. In addition, Hawkins added an elevator stop on the new level and two new snow-dump locations on the top level. The completed facility now provides additional parking spaces, improved security, and easier access. The updated parking structure is now also safer, with added emergency phones throughout the lower level and new 2nd level areas.

“Hawkins Construction Company has brought ideas to the District for both cost savings as well as scheduling to keep projects both on time and on budget. To help do this they make time early in the project for both collaborative value engineering as well as learning the intricacies of our projects to avoid potential schedule problems. This understanding of the project helps them with the management of subcontractors and makes for a more organized construction process.”
