Hawkins constructed the Kearney East Bypass for the Nebraska Department of Roads (NDOR) as part of a research project that evaluated two different bridge spans over Highway 30 and the Union Pacific Railroad mainline. While the bridge substructures are nearly identical, the superstructures are completely unique. One of the span bridge decks was cast in the traditional NDOR fashion utilizing stay-in-place decking as formwork. The second bridge was constructed of an NU-deck system that was designed by the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, and which utilized precast deck panels placed on standard girders. After placement, these panels were grouted and post-tensioned together for use as a driving surface. The project will be monitored for 75 years to evaluate and compare the lifespan of both deck systems.
